Full-time Placement: Legal Assistant / Community Outreach
Description: The BSC AmeriCorps volunteer will be working with individuals who have experienced wage and hour violations in the local workforce, an increasingly common problem faced by immigrants and other community members regardless of documentation. The BSC AmeriCorps volunteer will conduct outreach informational presentations to promote awareness of these unfair practices in the community. The BSC volunteer will be working with community groups and leaders to educate and empower low-income workers to address wage and hour violations, and will conduct intakes and research to assist the managing attorney with specific cases. Full-time Placement: VAWA Program Assistant / Safe Schools Program Coordinator
Description: The BSC AmeriCorps member would assist with the VAWA program, working with immigrant victims of violence and crime. They would perform initial consultations to determine eligibility for visas granted to crime victims, prepare applications, maintain files with appropriate reports and documentation for each case (administrative tasks in direct support of clients this AmeriCorps member serves), and conduct correspondence with appropriate immigration organizations. This AmeriCorps Member will specifically be assigned to assist eligible clients from rural communities who have transportation obstacles in getting to the PDN office. The member implements outreach education activities and presentations on domestic violence issues and services available to victims.
The BSC AmeriCorps member will also serve as the coordinator for the Safe Schools Texas program; a free, curriculum based seminar series for middle and high school students aimed at preventing harassment and discrimination in school. The member will specifically be assigned to the coordination and implementation of this program through the recruitment and supervision of volunteers. The member will work to disseminate this information in school districts and community-based organizations. This position makes it possible for PDN to begin this programming that would not be able to occur without this position.
