The Border Servant Corps

Community. Social Justice. Simplicity. Spirituality.

"I don't know what your destiny will be, but one thing I do know: the only ones among you who will really be happy are those who have sought and found how to serve." -- Albert Schweitzer

Where do we come from?

In 1995, Dot Quaintance, a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Las Cruces, New Mexico, began serving as a full-time volunteer with the Urban Servant Corps in Denver. As a full-time volunteer, Dot was witness to the impact volunteer service had on the volunteers and the community served. As a result of her experience and with the support of leadership and members of Peace Lutheran, Dot and a board of directors worked to create a volunteer program in the border area of Southern New Mexico and West Texas. The uniqueness and diversity of the program and the area is reflected in the name - Border Servant Corps.

In September 1997, four volunteers and a volunteer director formed a community and began working in El Paso and Las Cruces. In 1998, the BSC was awarded a three-year seed grand from Wheat Ridge Ministries to support a volunteer and a part-time director. Since then, BSC has blossomed into a program with 8 volunteer sites and 12 volunteers. The BSC now has two community houses and hosts volunteers from all over the country and England.

Through the 2009-10 service year, over 90 volunteers have been a part of the Border Servant Corps experience.
